Overview Unit Bimbingan Sekolah (School Guidance Unit)

Unit Bimbingan Sekolah (or UBS) is the school Guidance Unit, where counseling teachers and student members join forces to reach out and help other students in need of guidance and emotional support. Members are trained to be student peer counsellors. They are first selected at the end of Form One and stay on till Form Five. The selection procedure is as follows

•  interested students give their names to the senior members

•  teachers evaluate students based on these criteria : discipline, willingness to assist students and teachers, sociability, responsibility

The 2 counselling teachers who act as advisors are Pn. Song Cheng Ing and Pn. Martini Mohamad. It is one of the school's most popular societies and has 105 members.

Members have to reach out to other students or friends who may need help but who do not want to approach the counselling teachers

The first phase of training (Kursus Asas Pembimbing Rakan Sebaya) is done when the members are in Form Two. They are given training in self-understanding and basic counselling techniques. Training modules include personal evaluation and self-esteem, listening skills, assertiveness, empathy and others. Senior members conduct the training and also serve as committee members and facilitators. Activities are fun and involve active participation. We invite other schools like SMK Seri Bintang Selatan and SMK(P) Pudu to join us in this fun and exciting course, which is always held out of school in exciting places like Bagan Lallang Beach Resort and El-Azzhar Resort.

The second stage (Kursus Peningkatan PRS) is carried out when the members are in Form Three. Members are trained in self awareness, leadership, team-building, problem-solving and decision-making through activities, games and discussions. This is done together with 6 other schools in Pudu Zone and is carried out over 3 days and 2 nights away from school. Over the years the course has been held at different resorts and camps.

Other exciting activities are also held every year. During the semester holidays, we go on our annual trip to relax our minds and to de-stress after the mid-year exams. So far we have been to Melaka (2000), Cameron Highlands (2001), Sufes Campsite (2002), Tanjung Puteri Golf Resort (2003), Penang (2004), Tanjung Puteri Golf Resort again (2005), Tekam Plantation Resort, Pahang (2006) and Gopeng Nature Resort, Perak (2007). These trips have always been fun and members look forward to our annual trips with much eagerness and excitement.

Members also assist the counseling teachers in implementing their programs such as Orientation for Form One students, the Education Fair and Workshops on Learning Techniques. At every opportunity, members are guided to be group facilitators and course conductors. They also learn to plan and execute events.

Ours is a close-knitted unit. We work well together and our main purpose is to reach out to others in need of support and assistance.
