Speech Day 2007

It was the 7 th of July 2007 (which if you have not yet noticed, spells out 070707). It was definitely not just another regular Saturday, not for the students (and former students) of SBU at least. As both parents and students walk through the school gate, they were greeted by the smiling faces of the school prefects who then ushered them to their respective seats in the skylite area. By a quarter past eleven , almost all the excited students, anxiously waiting to receive their awards. They were all present for the glorious occasion, the prestigious and most looked-forward to event of the year, the annual Speech Day of SMK Seri Bintang Utara.

At 11.30am sharp, the kompang troupe came alive, indicating the arrival of the guest-of-honour, Senator Datuk Wira Syed Ali Alhabshee, the President of the Yayasan Pendidikan Cheras (YPC) as he welcomed to take his seat in front of the stage. The event begun with the prayer recital and followed by the speech from the school principal, Pn. Noraini bt. Mohd. Ali. She highlighted the school’s academic achievements. Next was the speech from the President of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Professor Madya Dr. Ainsah Omar who emphasized on upkeeping the good name of SBU as a premier school in the country. Following that, the guest-of-honour, Senator Datuk Wira was then invited to give his speech, in which he extended his heartiest congratulations to the students of SBU and told them to keep up the good work.

After all the speeches, the awards were then given out to the deserving students who had worked hard to ace their examinations with flying colours. It started with the first-formers, and then the second formers and finally the fourth-formers of 2006. There was a short interval in between during which the students from 4 Alpha and 4 Beta went up on stage to present their Choral Speaking poem entitled “A Stitch In Our Lives” and when that was over, the awards were then given out to the PMR 2006 achievers. The performance by the Orchestra society followed as they took the stage with their violin renditions of songs like Canon in D and many more. Later, the prize-giving resumed with the presenting of the awards to the SPM 2006 achievers.

The final performance was by the school choir which put on quite a show as they belted out “Dirgahayu Tanah Airku” and “Wouldn’t It Be Lovely” and finally, the national anthem itself which brought everyone to their feet as they all stood to sing the “Negaraku” at the top of their voices. The end of the performance marked the end of the Speech Day and soon after, the guests were invited to stay for some light refreshments in the Bilik Serbaguna.
