3.  Understand and use graphs of sine, cosine and tangent functions.

  Learning outcomes      :

Students will be able to:

1. Draw and sketch graphs of trigonometric functions
2. Determine the number of solutions to a trigonometric equation using sketched graphs.
3. Solve trigonometric equations using graphs

Activity        :

1. ICT will be used to sketch graphs.  The courseware is used to demonstrate the steps in sketching graphs of sine and cosine
2. Geometer Sketchpad (GSP) will be used to show the effects of changing the coefficients a, b and/or c in the formula of

       asin (bx + c) on the shape of the graph.

3. Students will be asked to come forward and change the coefficients by dragging and dropping the slider.
4. Steps 1 – 3 will be repeated for graphs of cosine and tangent.
5. Students will be asked to make conclusions and the teacher will verify whether their conclusions are correct or incorrect.
6. Students will sketch graphs manually on paper using the concepts learnt for given questions.
7. Students will plot a linear and a trigonometric graph on the same axes to determine the number of solutions graphically.
